Standard wiper blades freeze, the rubber gets brittle, and they smear instead of clear after one storm. Winter blades (Rain-X Latitude, Bosch ICON in winter compound) shed ice and don't freeze stuck to the glass.
Use winter-rated washer fluid (-20°F or colder). Summer washer fluid freezes in the reservoir, the lines, and the nozzles. A burst washer pump from frozen fluid is a $200+ repair.
When the windshield is iced and visibility is zero, don't drive. Defrost first. If the car won't start, that's a separate roadside call — same $249 / hour rate, $224 first hour online.
